- Thus was heard by me - on one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling near Sāvatthi, in Jeta’s forest, the park of Anāthapiṇḍika. On that occasion, the Blessed One addressed the monks, “Monks!”. “Reverend Sir!”, those monks replied to the Blessed One. The Blessed One said thus: “Monks, I do not see even one other form which completely preoccupies and fixates the mind of a man in this way as the form of a woman. The form of a woman, monks, completely preoccupies and fixates the mind of a man.” First.

- Thus have I learned - on one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling in Sāvatthi, in the Jeta’s Woods, Anāthapiṇḍika’s park. There the Blessed One adressed the monks - “Monks!”. “Venerable Sir!” answered the monks to the Blessed One. The Blessed One then said the following -
- “yāni kānici (whatever), bhikkhave, bhayāni uppajjanti sabbāni tāni bālato uppajjanti, no (not) paṇḍitato. ye keci upaddavā uppajjanti sabbe te bālato uppajjanti, no paṇḍitato. ye keci upasaggā uppajjanti sabbe te bālato uppajjanti, no paṇḍitato.
- “Monks, any fear whatsoever may arise, all of it arises due to the fool, not the wise. Any misfortune whatsoever may arise, all of it arises due to the fool, not the wise. Any danger whatsoever may arise, all of it arises due to the fool, not the wise.
- seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, naḷāgārā vā tiṇāgārā vā aggi mutto kūṭāgārānipi ḍahati ullittāvalittāni nivātāni (sheltered) phusitaggaḷāni pihitavātapānāni, evamevaṃ kho, bhikkhave, yāni kānici bhayāni uppajjanti…no paṇḍitato.
- Monks, it is just like a fire that is set loose from a hut made of reeds or one made of grass that burns even a pinnacled house that is plastered inside out, sheltered, with locked doors and windows shut. Just in the same way, monks, any fear whatsoever may arise…not the wise.
- “iti kho, bhikkhave, sappaṭibhayo (dangerous) bālo, appaṭibhayo paṇḍito. saupaddavo bālo, anupaddavo paṇḍito. saupasaggo bālo, anupasaggo paṇḍito. natthi, bhikkhave, paṇḍitato bhayaṃ, natthi paṇḍitato upaddavo, natthi paṇḍitato upasaggo.
- Thus indeed, monks, the fool is dangerous, and not dangerous is the wise. The fool is calamitous, and not calamitous is the wise. The fool is risky, and not risky is the wise. No fear arises, monks, from the wise, no calamity arises from the wise, no danger arises from the wise.
- “tasmātiha (tasmā iha), bhikkhave, evaṃ sikkhitabbaṃ – ‘yehi tīhi dhammehi (with which three things) samannāgato bālo veditabbo te tayo dhamme abhinivajjetvā, yehi tīhi dhammehi samannāgato paṇḍito veditabbo te tayo dhamme samādāya vattissāmā (shall we practice)’ti. evañhi vo, bhikkhave, sikkhitabba”nti. paṭhamaṃ.
- Therefore, in this case, monks, it should be trained thus - “Let us practice having steered clear of whatever those three things a fool is known to possess, and having undertaken whatever those three things the wise is known to possess.” “Thus indeed should be practiced by you, monks.” First.
- Alternatively: whatever three things a fool should be known to possess, having steered clear of those three things, and whatever three things a wise should be known to possess, having undertaken those three things, we shall practice.
