- 90 subjects were taught; students slepts on the floor;
- it was where V. Sāriputta's home village is
- kammavācā
- in pabbajjā, if the teacher says 'm' and the students says 'ṁ' it seems to be allowable
- some grammars say there are other sānunāsika letter other than the normal 6: nñṇṅmṁ
- sānunāsika: sallakkhaṇa: the first 'l' is influenced by the 'ṁ' where it comes from (saṁ lakkhaṇa); it doesn't matter for recitation
- nirunāsika: pattakalla: the first 'l' is not influenced by 'ṁ' since it comes from kāla ya/ṇya
- according to all grammarians, in Pāḷi there is only closed 'a'; modern grammarians say it has both closed and opened 'a'
- closed 'a': normal a sound as in father (closed because the throat area is relatively tighter than the opened 'a')
- opened 'a': shwa soun as in cut
- sinhalese have 2 'a's
- niggahīta in Pāḷi should close the mouth and the air should come out from the nose; mouth here means the teeth (but if the air must be released through the nostrils, if the throat is closed, the fact that the teeth are opened or not does not change the sound of the niggahīta; discuss) #q🙋🏼♂
