Vassūpanāyika for Sāmaṇeras

V-a: sāmaṇeras should also undertake and maintain the purimika vassūpanāyika

Eligibility of Upasampannas for Kaṭhinatthāra Vinayakamma

Eligibility
- sāmaṇeras: not eligible to participate
- upasampannas:
  - eligible: can lead the kamma, get the robe and benefits
  - not eligible: can act as gaṇapūraka and recite if needed
Acc. to quorum: minimum bhikkhus: 5 (at least 1 eligible)
- no maximum
- V-a, Kathinakkhandhako: gaṇanavasena tāva pacchimakoṭiyā pañca janā labhanti, uddhaṃ satasahassampi, pañcannaṃ heṭṭhā na labhanti
Acc. to residence
- -a: vutthavassavasena purimikāya vassaṃ upagantvā paṭhamapavāraṇāya pavāritā labhanti, chinnavassā vā pacchimikāya upagatā vā na labhanti
  - if they observe purimikā and do pavāraṇā on the first pavāraṇā day:
    - eligible for kathinatthāravinayakamma
    - if done so, get kaṭhinānisaṃsa
  - if vassacchedā or pacchimikā: no (can be gaṇapūraka acc. to mahāpaccarī)
- Mahāpaccarī:
  - 3 gaṇapūrakas: not eligible, no kathinānisaṁsa, but can serve as gaṇapūraka (quorum-completing members)
    - if purimikā at another monastery: not eligible; only gaṇapūraka
    - if vassaccheda
    - if pacchimikā observer
    - notes:
      - V-a: purimikāya upagatānaṃ pana sabbe gaṇapūrakā honti, ānisaṃsaṃ na labhanti, ānisaṃso itaresaṃyeva hoti
      - if eligible monk is not skilful, invite a skilful monk as gaṇapūraka and have him recite the kammavācā
  - even if there is just 1 eligible monk, the remaining 4 can be gaṇapūraka
    - V-a: sace purimikāya upagatā cattāro vā honti tayo vā dve vā eko vā, itare gaṇapūrake katvā kathinaṃ attharitabbaṃ

Requierements for Kathinānisaṁsa

undertake the purimikā

complete the Pavāraṇā in the same monastery
participate in the kaṭhinatthārakamma

Eligibility of Sāmaṇeras for Kaṭhinatthāra Vinayakamma

If a sāmaṇera enters purimikā and:

remains as sāmaṇera throughout the retreat: not eligible for kathinakamma
gets upasampadā
- after the 1st month but before the 1st pavāraṇā, without vassaccheda, does pavāraṇā: can be gaṇapūraka and get kathinānisaṁsa
  - obhāsa:
    - unclear whether he can receive the kathina robe
    - it seems he cannot be the eligible monk and lead the kamma
    - if he ends up being the only one in the monastery: it seems he cannot do kathina, even if he calls other gaṇapūrakas since he himself is just a gaṇapūraka
    - he seems to be the only gaṇapūraka that can get the kathinānisaṁsa
- in the 1st month and enters pacchimikā: can be gaṇapūraka and get kathinānisaṁsa
  - V-a: atha cattāro bhikkhū upagatā, eko paripuṇṇavasso sāmaṇero, so ce pacchimikāya upasampajjati, gaṇapūrako ceva hoti, ānisaṃsañca labhati. Tayo bhikkhū dve sāmaṇerā, dve bhikkhū tayo sāmaṇerā, eko bhikkhu cattāro sāmaṇerāti etthāpi eseva nayo
- 4 purimikā pavāraṇā monks + 1 sāmaṇera turned bhikkhu
  - same for 3 and 2, 2 and 3, and 1 and 4

Kathinānisaṁsa for Sāmaṇeras

Vjrb-ṭ: pacchimikāya upasampanno paṭhamapavāraṇāya pavāretumpi labhati, vassiko ca hoti ānisaṃsañca labhatīti sāmaṇerānaṃ vassūpagamanaṃ anuññātaṃ hoti, sāmaṇerā kathinānisaṃsaṃ labhantī”ti vadanti.

Vassaccheda & Antarāya for Sāmaṇeras

Sāmaṇeras may leave due to antarāyas like upasampannas: vassaccheda

if he gets upasampadā: no pavāraṇa or kathinānisaṁsa
if he can enter pacchimikā: he should
- if he gets upasampadā: no pavāraṇa or kathinānisaṁsa

Vassaccheda Procedure

if failing to enter purimikā:
- due to an allowed reason: anāpatti and should enter pacchimikā
- without allowed reason: dkṭ and should enter pacchimikā
if purimikā is broken: should enter pacchimikā
note: one should not leave for a cārikā without completing the 3-months residence

Knowledge Requirements for Vassūpanāyika

To enter the residence, the group of monks should know:

uposathaṃ
uposathakammaṃ
pātimokkhaṃ
pātimokkhuddesaṃ

If all are bālā abyattā (immature and unskilled; don’t know the above):

if a few monks: should not enter residence there without a pātimokkhuddesaka
if many monks: arrange for one to go, learn (in brief/detail), and return the same day
- if not: return within 7 days
  - if not: should not enter (purimikā) residence there
    - if they do: dkṭ
      - V-p: Idha pana, bhikkhave, aññatarasmiṃ āvāse sambahulā bhikkhū vassaṃ vasanti bālā abyattā. Te na jānanti uposathaṃ vā uposathakammaṃ vā pātimokkhaṃ vā pātimokkhuddesaṃ vā . . . Evañcetaṃ labhetha, iccetaṃ kusalaṃ. No ce labhetha, na, bhikkhave, tehi bhikkhūhi tasmiṃ āvāse vassaṃ vasitabbaṃ. Vaseyyuṃ ce, āpatti dukkaṭassa
      - V-a: Na bhikkhave tehi bhikkhūhi tasmiṃ āvāse vassaṃ vasitabbanti purimikāya pātimokkhuddesakena vinā na vassaṃ upagantabbaṃ

If there is a pātimokkhuddesaka bhikkhu: enter purimikā

if he leaves, disrobes, or dies:
- within the first month (before pacchimikā entering day):
  - if another pātimokkhuddesaka is present: continue the residence there
  - if no other pātimokkhuddesaka: go to another place and enter pacchimikā
    - if knowingly stay: dkṭ
      - V-a: Sace so vassūpagatānaṃ pakkamati vā, vibbhamati vā, kālaṃ vā karoti, aññasmiṃ satiyeva pacchimikāya vasituṃ vaṭṭati, asati aññattha gantabbaṃ, agacchantānaṃ dukkaṭaṃ
- after the first month: continue until the end of the purimikā
  - V-a: sace pana pacchimikāya pakkamati vā vibbhamati vā kālaṃ vā karoti, māsadvayaṃ vasitabbaṃ
