2 Situations for Āpatti

V-a:

• Anapekkhagamanena: leaving not intending to return: dkṭ when upacārātikkame (going beyond the upacāra)
  • note: sāpekkhagamana: leaving intending to return
• Aññattha aruṇaṃ uṭṭhāpanena: leaving with sāpekkhagamana but akaraṇīyena: dkṭ when dawn breaks elsewhere
  • vmv: sāpekkhassa akaraṇīyena gantvā aññattha aruṇaṃ uṭṭhāpanena vā
  • srtd: sāpekkhagamanena aññattha aruṇuṭṭhāpanena āpatti veditabbā

Paṭisedha: Not Entering Vassāvāsa

• Background: Chabbaggiyas intentionally avoided entering the rains residence
• Prohibition: Na, bhikkhave, vassaṃ na upagantabbaṃ. Yo na upagaccheyya, āpatti dukkaṭassa: one should not not enter the rains-residence; otherwise, dkṭ

Paṭisedha: Avoiding Vassāvāsa

• Background: Chabbaggiyas deliberately went beyond the monastery boundary on the rains-entry day to avoid entering vassāvāsa
• Prohibition: Na, bhikkhave, tadahu vassūpanāyikāya vassaṃ anupagantukāmena sañcicca āvāso atikkamitabbo. Yo atikkameyya, āpatti dukkaṭassa: one should not intentionally go beyond the monastery boundary on the day of entering the rains residence to evade the rains-observance; otherwise, dkṭ
  • comm:
    • crossing one and returning: 1 offense
    • crossing multiple upacāras: multiple offenses
  • āvāsātikkamana: going beyond the monastery (boundary)

Anuññā: Vassukkaḍḍhana

• Background: King Bimbisāra wanted the Saṅgha to postpone the rains residence by one month for practical reasons
  • vassukkaḍḍhana: postponing the rains residence
• Anujānāmi, bhikkhave, rājūnaṃ anuvattituṃ: allowed to comply with the kings
  • rājūnaṁ anuvattituṁ: complying with kings regarding the timing of vassāvāsa when circumstances require it
    • vnlkr: kings used to postpone the rains (vassaṃ uddhaṃ kaḍḍhanti) every 3rd year, adding an additional month (adhikamāsa) after āsāḷha also called āsāḷha
      • normally: 12 months (āsāḷha -> sāvaṇa) every 3rd year: 13 months (āsāḷha -> extra āsāḷha -> sāvaṇa)

Meaning of “Rājūnaṃ Anuvattituṃ”

Aññasmimpi dhammike kamme anuvattitabbaṃ, adhammike pana na kassaci anuvattitabbaṃ

• not against dhammavinaya: follow
  • includes vassāvāsa since there is no disadvantage
  • vmtvndn: uposatha observance:
    • 14th or 15th: can be followed 13th or 16th: cannot be followed because
      • Na, bhikkhave, anuposathe uposatho kātabbo
      • they are not uposatha days
      • there would be a decline in virtue
      • it would be a dkṭ
• against dhammavinaya: don’t follow
• note: includes royal customs, regulations, or administrative arrangements
